Sarah Verelst was a multiple OVC Medal of Honor winner

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - A total of 136 student-athletes were honored as Southeast Scholar Athletes during a luncheon on Wednesday at the Show Me Center.

Student-athletes must have a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average to be honored as a Scholar Athlete. The group represents 52% of the athletes at Southeast including 76% of the female student-athletes.

Ohio Valley Conference Medal of Honor winners also received their awards at the luncheon. Southeast claimed a league high 22 OVC Medals of Honor that go to the student-athletes who achieve the highest grade point average in a Conference sponsored sport.

OVC Medal of Honor winners included baseball players Cory Justice and Josh Parham; women's basketball players Rachel Blunt and Natalie Purcell; cross country runners Mark McNamara, Hannah Korte, Sarah Verelst, and Amy Warren; football players Matt Boyack and Zach Leible; soccer players Jessica Kaiz and Jessica Wuellner; tennis player Kim Anderson; and track and field athletes Kenji Chiba, Mark McNamara, Michele Jett, Hannah Korte, Kim Krieger, Sarah Verelst, Amy Warren, Amy West and Heather West.

The Southeast women's track and field team received an OVC Team Academic Achievement Award presented by Aeropostale. The award is presented annually in each Conference-sponsored sport to the member institution team with the greatest percentage of its student-athletes named to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll.

The Redhawks had a total of 97 student-athletes named to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll. To be listed on the Honor Roll, recipients must have achieved at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average.
