It has been another tremendous year for athletics at Southeast Missouri State University.



 

It has been another tremendous year for athletics at Southeast Missouri State University.

During the 1999-2000 school year Southeast claimed four Ohio Valley Conference team championships (basketball, volleyball and women's indoor and outdoor track), two OVC Tournament Championships (basketball and volleyball) and sent two teams (basketball and volleyball) on to NCAA tournament compeitition.

The women's athletic teams at Southeast celebrated the 25th anniversary of women's athletics by winning the OVC Women's All Sports Trophy for an unprecedented sixth straight year!

Southeast athletes claimed five OVC Athlete of the Year Awards including Amy Henken in volleyball, Amy Arteme in cross country, Heather Keltner and Lutricia Purham in women's outdoor track and Jeremy Johnson in baseball.

Johnson was also selected as the OVC Male Athlete of the Year.

Southeast coaches claimed four OVC Coach of the Year Awards including Heather Nelson in women's soccer, Cindy Gannon in volleyball and Joey Haines for women's indoor and outdoor track.

Athletes also performed outstanding in the classroom with a school record and league high 12 OVC Academic Medal of Honor winners and a school record 121 Southeast Scholar Athletes with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Two athletes, gymnast Carri Egbert and track athlete Becky Shull, concluded their athletic careers with perfect 4.0 grade point averages!

Shull was named third team GTE Academic All-America while basketball player Paula Corder-King and track and cross country athlete Leslie McNamara were GTE Academic all-district selections.

Southeast's athletic program continues to bring national attention to Southeast. The men's basketball team had three games televised nationally on ESPN 2, ESPN and CBS.

The basketball team's advancement to the Big Dance, the NCAA Tournament, generated national publicity unprecedented in the 126 year history of Southeast Missouri State.

It was another great year in athletics at Southeast.
