Don Kaverman
Athletics Director
Fourth Year

October 7, 2002

Dear Mr. Kaverman,

I graduated from Chadron State College in Chadron, NE in 1999 with a B.A. degree in Recreation and Physical Education. While attending Chadron State I participated in athletics at the NCAA division II level. After graduation I played a couple of years of professional indoor football. Currently I am working with a insurance company in St. Louis, MO and looking to pursue a career as a Athletic Director at a college or university. I would like to know what type of background you look for when your hiring your assistant directors or the athletic department personnel in general. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Dan O’Donnell

Dan,

The answer to this would obviously depend on what we were looking for. In general, candidates would need a minimum of a bachelor's degree and preferably a masters. The degree discipline isn't as important as their relevant work experience. I would advise aspiring college athletics administrators to accept an internship, graduate assistantship or other entry level opportunity to get their foot in the door. Then perform - and better opportunities will usually become available. Development, marketing, compliance and financial affairs are all critical areas of expertise for the aspiring AD. Hope this helps.
