Don Kaverman is in his fourth year as athletic director at Southeast Missouri State University.
Kaverman, formerly director of athletics at Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo., began his duties at Southeast on Feb. 1, 1999.
In his three full years at Southeast, Kaverman has presided over a very successful athletic program. Southeast has claimed seven Ohio Valley Conference team championships, four OVC tournament championships and has sent four teams on to NCAA tournament competition including the 2002 baseball team that upset Alabama in the opening round of this year's NCAA Regional baseball tournament.
The women's athletic teams at Southeast won the OVC Women's All Sports Trophy for an unprecedented sixth straight year in 1999-2000 and finished second in each of the past two years.
During Kaverman's tenure, Southeast athletes have won 11 OVC Athlete of the Year Awards and coaches have claimed six OVC Coach of the Year Awards.
Athletes also performed well in the classroom with 40 OVC Medal of Honor winners over the last three years and a total of 371 Southeast Scholar Athletes.
Kaverman has facilitated numerous capital improvements for athletics including the completion of a new softball complex, the complete renovation of the Abe Stuber Track & Field Complex, the construction of a new tennis complex and the completion of the first phase of planned improvements at Houck Stadium, the installation of the new Field Turf playing surface. Work will be completed this fall on a new exterior finish for Houck Stadium and improvements to the press box. Men's and women's locker rooms at the Show Me Center have been completely remodeled and new basketball offices on the north side of the Show Me Center will be completed this fall.
Kaverman, a graduate of Michigan State University, was athletic director at Missouri Western for four years. He previously served as associate director of athletics for business and financial affairs at San Diego State University from 1992 to 1995 and as associate director of athletics for student-athlete services at San Diego State from 1988 to 1992. Previously, he was head athletic trainer at San Diego State, coordinator of sports medicine at Ferris State University, conditioning coordinator and assistant athletic trainer for the Detroit Lions and assistant athletic trainer at Northwestern University.
He holds a master's degree in physical education and a bachelor's degree in business administration, both from Michigan State.
Active in a number of organizations, Kaverman has served on the NCAA Division II Nominating Committee, the NACDA Division II Athletic Directors Association Board of Directors, the College Athletic Business Management Association, the National Association of Athletic Development Directors, the National Association of Athletics Compliance Coordinators, and the National Athletic Trainers Association.
Kaverman is the recipient of the 1988 Meritorious Performance and Professional Promise Award from the California State University System and the 1980 Outstanding Young Man in America Award from the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Kaverman and his wife, Sue, have three children; Scott 16, Robert 14 and Amanda 11. They reside in Cape Girardeau.
