Southeast Track and Field Brought Home First and Third Place Team Finishes

Cape Girardeau, MO (January 24,2004) - After two days of competition, the Southeast Missouri State track teams brought home first and third place team finishes. The women finished first place with 137 points followed by Southern Illinois University with 131 points. The men placed third with 85 points, close behind the University of Memphis with 88 points. Southern Illinois University pulled away with the lead with 141 points on the men's side.

Both teams earned many first place individual finishes on the weekend. Those include Heather Jenkins who took first place in the weight throw with a throw of 61'6.75. That throw provisionally qualified Jenkins for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Jenkins was also first place in the shot put competition marking a throw of 47'7. Senior hurdler Lyndsey Stevenson placed first in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.82. Lindsay Zeiler won the mile run in 5:05.43 and Brooke Woodruff was first in the 800-meter run in 2:14. Daniel Jones was the only male athlete to place first in any events for Southeast. Jones won the weight throw competition with a toss of 52'11.5.


Second place finishes for the Otahkians were sophomore Michelle Jett in the pole vault. Jett recorded a vault of 10'5.5. Lindsey Meyr jumped 18'4.5 in the long jump and Juanita Coleman was second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.71. Kaci Pilcher ran the 3,000 meters in 10:19.31. The 4x400 meter relay team of Nyisha Porter, Woodruff, Coleman and LaQuita Andrews recorded 3:52.15 placing them second in the event. Jay Heddell also earned second place honors for the men's team throwing 47'11 in the weight competition.

The Southeast squad also recorded numerous third place finishes from both the women's and men's teams. LaQuita Andrews was third in the 200-meter dash in 26.04 and also in the 400-meter dash in a time of 59.22. Placing third for Southeast in the triple jump was freshman Heather West in a leap of 38'11.5 and Meleisa Greene took home third place in the long jump jumping 18'1.75. Third place finishes for the men were Andrew Lambert in the high jump with a jump of 6'4.75, Shawn Statler in the long jump in 21'11, David Herman in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.20 and Jordan Willi recorded 14'7.25 in the pole vault. Jay Heddell also brought home third place in the shot with a put of 51'5.5. Freshman Miles Smith had two third place finishes. In the 200-meter dash Smith ran 22.60 and in the 400-meter dash he clocked in at 49.44. The men's 4x400 meter relay which included Smith, Alonzo Nelson, Chaz Brown and Seth Schuster ran 3:24.28 placing them in third.

The Southeast track squad will compete again next weekend at the University of Illinois in the Illini Classic. The meet will be held on Saturday January 31,2004.
