Track & Field Teams Has Impressive Showing at Redhawk Invite

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Friday, February 17, 2006) The Redhawks men and women's track and field teams each had solid individual performances at the Redhawk Invitational held in the Southeast Missouri State Student Recreation Center on Friday evening. The women's team won eight individual titles and the men's team took home seven individual titles in the non-team scored event.

Senior Andrew Lambert led the way with two individual titles as he won the long jump with a jump of 22' 7 ¼". With little rest between events he then claimed the high jump title with a jump of 6' 8".

The Redhawks would claim the first four spots on the high jump with Ryan Doty (6' 4"), Anthony Harris (6' 2") and John Berry (6' 2") finishing behind Lambert.

In the triple jump the Redhawks swept the top-three spots with Mike Colon winning the crown with a jump of 46' 5 ¼".

In the running events Chris Williams won the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.52. Alonzo Nelson won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.76. Danny Stults won the 800 meter run in a time of 1:58.3. Chris Herren edged teammate Gabe Lutes for the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:52.3.

In the women's field events Lainie Bohnsack out-jumped teammate Funtasia Clark to win the high jump with a jump of 5' 7". Clark would bounce back with a victory in the triple jump with a distance of 35' 6 ¾".

Thrower Heather Jenkins had a solid performance on the weight throw as she was the top collegiate finisher with a second place throw of 61' ¾".

Michelle Jett finished second on the pole vault clearing the height of 11' 6".

Kyra Joiner won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.4. Tasha Fortenberry edged teammate Precious Elliot in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.47. Whitney Thomas won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.2 seconds. Nyisha Porter won the 200-meter dash in 26.7 seconds ahead of teammate Orie Ibe.

In the distance events freshman Julie Koenegstein won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:29.3. Senior Jen Caywood won the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:32.5 just ahead of teammate Kris Woolf who finished in 10:32.9.

Two athletes with Redhawk ties competed unattached and won their respected events. Graduate assistant coach Chad Williams won the pole vault by clearing 14' 00". Former Redhawks gymnastics assistant coach and 2008 Summer Olympic hopeful Andree' Pickens won the women's pole vault with a height of 13' 6".

Next for both of the Redhawks track and field teams will be the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships on Friday, February 24 in Nashville, Tennessee.
