Redhawks Fire From All Cylinders at Home

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Friday, February 22, 2008) Competing in their only home indoor meet of the season the Redhawks track & field team put on a show for the hometown crowd despite the limited track events and the availability of many of the Redhawks top athletes. With a near-capacity crowd at the Student Recreation Center on hand to watch the Broadway Prescription Invitational the Redhawks took home seven individual titles and had one athlete provisionally qualify for the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. With teammates and the home crowd clapping and cheering; sophomore Brandon Colbert was down to his final toss in the shot put. With a deep breath, a quick spin and a large grunt, Colbert heaved the 16-pound sphere a career and Ohio valley Conference best 58' 4 1/2". The throw also qualified Colbert provisionally for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Colbert was then followed by a trio of the nation's best throwers from Memphis including Glen Edwards (56' 8 3/4") and Knut Syversen (55' 8 1/4"). Sophomore miler Jamie Lee continued his strong running of late by winning the mile with a new season best time of 4:24.10. Teammate Brandon Funderburk finished third with a time of 4:30.10, setting a new career best. Earlier in the evening Colbert finished third in the weight throw with a toss of 59' 6 1/4". Teammate Andy Croxford finished sixth with a throw of 53' 1/4", setting a new season's best. In the high jump senior Ryan Doty finished second with a jump of six feet. Running unattached Danny Stults won the 800 meter run with a time of 1:59.9 The women's team thrived in the track events capturing five of the six competed events. Precious Elliott started the winning with a victory in the 55 meter dash. Her time of 7.24 set a new season's best for the junior. Teammate Rachel Kahle finished second with a time of 7.26. Orie Ibe followed that with a win in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.32. Juli Koenegstein won the mile with a time of 5:04.3. Teammate Danielle Henry finished third with a 5:24.9. The Redhawks took the first three spots in the 800 meters led by Kelly Good's time of 2:25.6 and was quickly followed by Henry (2:26.8) and then Kasey Owen (2:27.3). The women's team closed the meet with Brandi Gervais winning the 3,000 meter in 10:50.7. In the field events Audrey Harwood and Lauren McNamara finished second and third respectively in the pole vault. Ashley Brewer finished fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 55' 00". Brianna Egbuka followed her with a fifth place finish with a throw of 48' 10 1/4". Funtasia Clark finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 36' 00". The Redhawks will head down to Nashville, Tennessee next weekend for the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. |
