Southeast Wins Combined Championship

Cape Girardeau, MO (April 3, 2004) At the Gatorade Classic this weekend the Southeast Missouri State track and field team took first place in the combined team score with a total of 256.5 points. Second place in the combined team score was Southwest Missouri with 241 points and SIU-Carbondale was third with 174 points.

Southwest Missouri pulled away with the win on the women's side of the competition with 171 points. Southeast women came in a close second with 159 points and Illinois State was third with 70.5 points.

The Southeast men's team finished fourth overall with Rend Lake College taking the win with 111.5 points. Memphis was second with 101 points and Western Illinois took third with 100.5 points.

"I was really happy to see that we won the combined team championship," said head track and field coach Joey Haines. "It was a great team effort to come away with the win."
 

 

Heather Jenkins was the only double-winner for the Southeast women's squad. Jenkins won the hammer competition Friday evening and came back today and won the discus with a throw of 173-04. She also placed fourth in the shot put.

Lyndsey Stevenson won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.33 and was also fifth in the 400-meter hurdles. Michelle Jett also won her event, the pole vault, with a vault of 11-00. Brooke Woodruff placed first in the 800-meter run in 2:10.63.

Colleen Burke and Kaci Pilcher went one and two in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Burke won the event in 11:17.14 and Pilcher ran 11:26.19.

LaQuita Andrews placed second in the 400-meter dash in 56.80

Megan Youse took third in the discus with 141-11 and Kris Woolf also had a third place finish in the 5000-meter run in 18:37.64. The 4x100-meter relay team of Natasha Fortenberry, LaQuita Andrews, Nyisha Porter and Rose Fulton were third in a time of 46.25.

Heather West was third in the triple jump with a jump of 39-01.25 along with the mile relay team of Porter, Andrews, Woodruff and Juanita Coleman that took third in a time of 3:47.46.

Jay Heddell was the winner of the shot put with a throw of 56-07.25 and also placed fifth in the discus.

Collin Sheridan took second place in the pole vault with a vault of 14-00. Second place in the 800-meter run was Jared Tanz in 1:53.91. Alonzo Nelson was also second in his event. Nelson ran 52.70 in the 400 hurdles.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Tim Jefferson, Miles Smith, Seth Schuster and Jon Jefferson took third in the event recording a time of 41.86. Andrew Lambert was third in high jump with a jump of 6-06.75. Lambert was also fifth in the long jump.

Shawn Statler took third in the long jump with a leap of 23-03.25.

The Southeast Missouri State track team will continue competition next weekend at the Mississippi State Invitational in Starkville, MS. The meet will be held on Saturday April, 10.
