Heddell Highlights Track's Busy Weekend

Track & Field sends athletes to threee different meets this weekend.


Sophomore Jay Heddell capped a busy weekend with a victory in the shot put at the UMKC Invitational.

Southeast's track & field team was scattered around the Midwest this weekend, with athletes participating in either the Drake Relays, UMKC Invitational or the Murray State Twilight Invitational.

It is safe to say Jay Heddell had a busy weekend. On Friday, Heddell finished eighth in the discus throw at the prestigious Drake Relays with a throw of 170' 1". He then traveled to the UMKC Invitational to win the shot put on Saturday with a throw of 56' 7 ½". He also finished third in the discus throw at UMKC with a throw of 160' 7".

Otahkian thrower Heather Jenkins also placed in the Drake Relays. Her discus throw of 158' 8" earned her fifth place in the competition that included some of the best throwers in the NCAA.

At the UMKC Invitational, Meleisa Greene and Lindsey Meyr finished two-three in the long jump. Greene jumped to 18' ½" while Meyr registered a jump of 17' 5 ¼".

Jessie Thompson finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a season-best time of 11:48. Courtney Haman finished 7th in the javelin with a distance of 119' 7".

Sara Kaznica headlined the MSU Invitational for Southeast. She finished second in the pole vault, behind only the unnattached Jennifer Stukenberg. Megan Youse finished fourth and third in the shot put and discus throw. On the men's side, Jeremy Benberry, David Kirby and Scott Merritt finished sixth through eighth in the shot put. Kirby and Benberry also finished fifth and eighth, respectively, in the discus. James Brainer was sixth in the javelin.

Southeast will next be in action next weekend as they host the Ohio Valley Conference championships at Abe Stuber track & field complex.
