Otahkian Track In Lead After First Day At OVC's

Nashville, Tenn. (May 2, 2003) - After winning four of the first six events of the 2003 Ohio Valley Conference Track Championships, the Otahkian track team is on cruise control for another OVC Outdoor Track Championship in Nashville.

The women lead the rest of the field with 84 points, followed by Tennessee State at 37.5 and Eastern Kentucky at 34 points.

Courtney Haman won her third-straight javelin with a throw of 143'7". She also won the high jump with a jump of 5'9". Heather Jenkins won her second-straight shot put title with an OVC-Meet record throw of 50' 5 ½". Megan Youse and Nichole Portell were third and fifth, respectively in the event.

Kris Woolf won the 10,000 meters with a time of 39.17.32. Ashley Brinegar and Emily Zimmerman were 6th and 8th, respectively in the race. Other noteables for the Otahks were Colleen Burke who finished second in the steeplechase, as well as Meleisa Greene, who finished second in the long jump.

The men are second after the first day. The Indians finished with 60 points, just behind the men of EIU who had 71.3. Tennessee State rounds out the top three with 44 points.

Chad Sierman won the steeplechase for the Southeast with an automatic regional qualifying time of 9.08.70. Brandon Meyer won his third OVC shot put title with a throw of 55'6 ¾", as Jay Heddell, Jeremy Benberry and Dan Jones were 2nd, 5th and 6th, respectively in the event. Shelton Scott finished third in the long jump for the Indians.

Day two of the competition will begin tomorrow on the campus of Tennessee State University.
