Track Competes At Georgia Tech Invite

Cape Girardeau, MO (May 16, 2004) At the Georgia Tech Invitational this weekend in Atlanta, GA several Southeast athletes ran seasonal best times or qualified for the NCAA Regional. The athletes had some outstanding performances to prepare them for the Regional meet.

Sophomore Alonzo Nelson was the only Southeast athlete to run a regional qualifying time in his event. Nelson ran 51.99 in the 400-meter hurdles.

Jay Heddell who has already qualified in his events, placed third in the shot put with a throw of 56-4 and eleventh in the discus with 159-2.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Jon Jefferson, Tim Jefferson, Miles Smith and Seth Schuster ran a seasonal best time of 40.94.


The 4x400-meter relay team also ran a seasonal best time of 3:11.71. Making up the 4x400 were Alonzo Nelson, Chaz Brown, Jared Tanz and Miles Smith.

Heather Jenkins took first place in the discus competition with a throw of 157-0 while Megan Youse was fourth with 150-9. Jenkins was eighth in the shot put with a toss of 47-1.50.

Nyisha Porter ran a seasonal best in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.44.

Brooke Woodruff was seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:08.54.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Natasha Fortenberry, Nyisha Porter, LaQuita Andrews and Rose Fulton also ran a seasonal best of 45.91.

Competing in two weeks in the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge, LA will be Heather Jenkins in the shot put and discus, Lindsay Zeiler in the 1500-meters, Michele Jett in the pole vault, the 4x100-meter relay team and Brooke Woodruff in the 800-meters.

Qualifiers for the men are Jay Heddell in the shot and disc, Alonzo Nelson in the 400 hurdles, Miles Smith in the 200 and 400-meters and the 4x400-meter relay.
