June 8, 2005

SACRAMENTO, CA. - (Wednesday, June 08, 2005) The Redhawks track team made their presence felt on day one of the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's Track and Field Championships on the campus of NCAA host Sacramento State. Miles Smith (St. Louis, Mo./Riverview Gardens) is one step closer to his goal of becoming an NCAA Champion as he qualified for the semifinals in the 400 meter dash with a time of 45.79 this evening.

Smith, who came into the championships with the fifth best time in the 400 in the NCAA, finished second in his preliminary heat as he coasted the last 20 meters after clinching the second-place finish in his heat and the automatic berth into the semifinals on Friday, June 10.

Texas Tech sprinter Andrae Williams won the heat with a preliminary-best time of 45.41. Smith's time was the fourth best of the preliminary round as the top two finishers in each heat advanced into the semifinals followed by the six best individual times.

2004 Olympians Darold Williamson (Baylor) and Kelly Willie (LSU) each advanced to the semifinals as well. Williamson, a gold medalist on the USA's 1,600 meter relay team, had the second-best time of the prelims with a time of 45.71. Willie `s time of 45.88 was the fifth-best time of the day.

Arizona State's Domenik Peterson was disqualified in the preliminaries due to false starts. Peterson, one of the favorites for the championship, had the NCAA's fourth best time ahead of Smith heading into the day.

Smith will join teammates Alonzo Nelson (Alton, Ill./East St. Louis High School), Chaz Brown (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) and Chris Poindexter (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North) in the semifinals of the 1,600 meter relay tomorrow evening.
