Track and Field Claims Two OVC Weekly Awards

Jan. 9, 2008

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State track and field athletes Miles Smith and Brandon Colbert were honored by the Ohio Valley Conference for their performances last month as they were named OVC Men's Indoor Track and Co-Field Athletes of the Week, the conference announced today in its weekly release.

Smith, a senior sprinter from St. Louis, earned a pair of first-place finishes at the season-opening Arkansas State Kickoff Klassic on Dec. 1. He won the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.29 which provisionally qualified him for the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships in addition to leading the Southeast 4x400-meter relay team to win the event at a time of 3:13.29.

Colbert posted four top-five finishes in the Redhawks' first two indoor meets of the season. The Troy, Mo., native captured the weight throw title with a mark of 59-10.25 and threw 56-5.75 to finish second in the shot put at the ASU Kickoff Klassic. In the SIU Fast Start Classic on Dec. 7, he broke his own school weight throw record with a toss of 59-11.75 for a second-place finish and won the shot put at a mark of 53-0.

The Redhawks will return to action on Jan. 18 when they return to Carbondale, Ill., for the SIU Saluki Booster Meet.
