Miles Smith Places Fourth at Hoosier Relays

Bloomington, Ind. - Junior Miles Smith of Southeast Missouri State University placed fourth in the 400-meters at the Hoosier Relays at Indiana University on Saturday. Smith had the third fastest time by a collegian in the talent laden field.

Smith, running in only his third indoor meet of the season, finished behind David Neville of Indiana who won the race in 46.69. Neville is the top rated 400-meter runner in the nation. Michael Tinsley of Jackson Stte was second in 46.69 while unattached runner Godfrey Herring was third in 47.03.

Smith, a gold medalist at this summer's world championships, finished ahead of Justin Harrison of Kentucky who is ahead of him in the national rankings.

Other top finishers for the Southeast men's team included a third place finish by Walter Washington in the 600 where he timed 1:20.47, a fourth place finish by triple jumper Bilal Hameed who leaped 48-9 1/2 and a fifth place finish by pole vaulter Jared Willie who vaulted 14-9.

The Southeast men's 4 X 400 relay team placed third in a time of 3:13.19.

The Redhawks women's team was led by thrower Heather Jenkins who placed fourth in the weight throw with a heave of 56-10 3/4. Freshman hurdler Whitney Whomas was eighth in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.01 and Taryn Phillips was eighth in the 600-meters.
