Track & Field Teams Garner Three OVC Weekly Honors

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (Tuesday, March 23, 2010) – The Southeast Missouri State track and field teams took three out of the possible four Ohio Valley Conference weekly awards in the opening weekend of the outdoor season. Brandon Colbert and Samantha Espiricueta were named Male and Female Field Athletes of the Week respectively, while Juli Koenegstein took home Female Track Athlete of the Week honors.

Colbert, a two-time OVC Outdoor Male Field Athlete of the Year (2007, 2009), recorded two top-two finishes this past weekend at the Rhodes Open Invitational in Memphis, Tennessee. He won the shot put title with a heave of 55’-2.25”. In the hammer throw he placed second, but placed first among collegiate athletes, with a career-best distance of 193’-11.00”.

This is the sixth OVC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week award in the career of the senior from Troy, Missouri.

Espiricueta, a native of Belton, Mo., was awarded her first OVC weekly honor after winning the javelin title at the Rhodes Open Invitational. A 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships qualifier and OVC champion, won the event with a throw of 155’-9.00”.

She also finished 11th in the hammer throw at the meet.

Koenegstein was named OVC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for the fourth time in her career. The redshirt senior from Chester, Illinois, won the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:56.41. A two-time OVC Champion in the steeplechase, she competed in her first meet in over ten months after sitting out the indoor season.

The Redhawks will next travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Friday, March 26 for the Alabama Relays.
