Big Weekend At Abe Stuber Track and Field Complex for Gatorade Classic

March 31, 2004

Cape Girardeau, MO (March 31, 2004) It will be a big weekend at the Abe Stuber Track and Field Complex as the Southeast Missouri State track team will host the Gatorade Classic on Friday and Saturday. Twenty-five teams will be traveling to Cape Girardeau to compete in the meet this weekend.

Teams competing in the meet are Illinois State, Memphis, Murray State, Southwest Missouri, Southern Illinois-Carbondale, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, Southern Indiana, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Western Illinois and Danville Community College. Austin Peay and Lipscomb will only bring women's teams and Tennessee State and Rend Lake Community College will only compete on the men's side.

The meet this weekend will be a scored meet with women's and men's team winners. There is also a combined men and women's team score. Last year at this meet the Southeast women won the meet and Memphis men's team won the men's championship, but Southeast came away with the combined overall team championship.

Competition will begin Friday evening at 4 p.m. with the Hammer Throw. This is the only event that is scheduled for Friday and all other events will begin Saturday at 11 a.m.

"This weekend we are going to see a lot of highly competitive events," said head track and field coach Joey Haines. "I would not be surprised if Regional Qualifying marks are reached in every event this weekend, that is how strong the competition is going to be."

Three Southeast athletes have already hit the Regional Qualifying Standards in last weekends competition. Heather Jenkins qualified in the shot put and discus, Jay Heddell in the shot and Meleisa Greene in the long jump.
