First Day of Gatorade Classic Competition Underway

Cape Girardeau, MO (April 2, 2004) The first day of competition of the Gatorade Classic began this afternoon with the men's and women's hammer throw. The hammer competition was the only event held today.

Junior Heather Jenkins of Southeast won the women's competition in the hammer with a throw of 171'4. Second place was Venisha Williams from Southern Illinois-Carbondale with 169'3 and in third place was Jamie Nurnberger of Murray State. Nurnberger threw 168'9.

On the men's side Robb Pfrank of Western Illinois won the event with a throw of 189'11. Second place from Western Illinois was Ryan Billingsley with a throw of 178'6 and Rhett Hillard was third with 169'2. Junior Daniel Jones was the only Southeast athlete in the men's competition. Jones took sixth place throwing 161'1.

Tomorrow's competition at the Abe Stuber Track and Field Complex will begin at 11 a.m. with running and field events.
