Redhawks Produce Seven Top-Ten Finishes at Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa. - (Sunday, May 1, 2005) The Redhawks track and field team captured six top-ten finishes at the prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines Iowa in the sold-out Drake Stadium. The Drake Relays is in its 96th year and features the top collegiate and amateur athletes in the country.

Junior Brooke Woodruff was the top individual finisher for the Redhawks placing third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:09.14.

The men's 400 meter relay team garnered the highest finish amongst the relay teams with a fourth place. The team of Jon Jefferson, Miles Smith, Tim Jefferson and Chris Poindexter finished with a season's best time of 40.66.

The 1,600 meter relay team finished sixth with a time of 3:10.30. Walt Washington and Chaz Brown teamed up with Smith and Poindexter for the top-ten finish.

The distance medley team of Kirk Nesbit, Washington, Danny Stults and Kevin McNab finished 10th with a time of 10:20.52.

Individually the Redhawks men were led by senior shot putter and three-time Ohio Valley Conference Field Athlete of the Week Brian Knippen, who finished seventh in the shot put. His throw of 56'00.50" was on his first toss as he fouled on his next five throws.

Fellow field competitor Jason Theodorakos finished ninth in the javelin with a throw of 190'09.00".

Alonzo Nelson finished ninth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 53.08.

Both the men's and women's team will prepare for the OVC Outdoor Championships this coming weekend at Clarksville, Tennessee starting on Thursday, May, 6.
