Southeast Leads Men's Comptition After First Day of OVC Track Championships

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Bolstered by a sweep of the first four places in the men's shot put, Southeast Missouri State has the day one lead at the Ohio Valley Conference Track & Field championships at the Abe Stuber Track and Field Complex.

The Redhawks lead the men's competition after six final events with 82.5 points while Eastern Illinois is second with 41. Southeast scored 28 of the points in the shot put where the Redhawks took the top four places.

Andy Glass won the shot with a throw of 49-8 1/2, Josh Uchtman took second, Andy Croxford third and Richard Martin fourth.

Southeast also go wins from John Berry in the long jump, Ben Martin in the javelin and Brandon Karcher in the 10,000-meters.

Berry's winning jump of 25-5 1/2 is the ninth best jump in the nation this year.

The women's championship is very close with the top seven teams within 11.5 points of the lead. Eastern Illinois is on top with Eastern Illinois leading after six events with 37.5 points with Jacksonville State second with 35.5. Murray State in third with 34, Tennessee State fourth with 30.5, Southeast Missouri fifth with 29, Austin Peay sixth with 27.5 and Samford seventh with 26.

No team had more than one individual win.
