Track Team on the Road to OVC Championships

Cape Girardeau, MO (May 5, 2004) The Southeast Missouri State women's track team is looking for another championship title this weekend in Birmingham, AL while the men's team will be vying for the championship as well. Samford University is the host school for the 2004 OVC Outdoor Championships.

At the 2003 Outdoor Track and Field Championships last year, the Southeast women's team placed first with 193 points with Eastern Kentucky in second with 174 points. The Southeast men were second with 141 points behind Eastern Illinois with 236 points.

"We're going down to Alabama this weekend to win both the women's and men's championships," said head coach Joey Haines. "The women's team is looking to defend their title and the men are definitely in the running for the championship."

Going into the meet this weekend several Southeast athletes have the top performances in the conference. Heather Jenkins will be looking to defend her first place finishes at the Outdoor OVC Championships in 2003 in the shot put and discus this weekend along with Brooke Woodruff in the 800-meter run and Michele Jett in the pole vault. Also top contenders in their events are Meleisa Greene in the long jump, Lindsay Zeiler in the 1,500-meter run, Heather West in the triple jump and the 4x400-meter relay team.


Jay Heddell and Jordan Willi are both 2003 OVC Outdoor Champions, Heddell in the discus and Willi in the pole vault. Heddell will also contend for first place in the shot put. Chad Sierman will look to reclaim his title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Other top performances in the OVC going into the meet this weekend are Andrew Lambert in the long jump and the 4x400-meter relay team.
