Colbert & Espiricueta Named OVC Field Athletes of the Year on the Eve of Championships

By Patrick ClarkSoutheast Missouri State Sports Information BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - The Southeast Missouri State track and field team was well represented at the annual presentation of the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Awards on Thursday afternoon. Senior Brandon Colbert was named Outdoor Male Field Athlete of the Year for the fourth time in his career and fellow senior Samantha Espiricueta took home the Outdoor Female Field Athlete of the Year honors. Colbert was named Field Athlete of the Year last season and in 2009. He redshirted during the 2008 outdoor season after being named the 2007 Outdoor Field of the Athlete as a freshman. He is the reigning OVC champion in the discus and hammer throw. This season he ranks second in the OVC in both the hammer and discus. He set the school record in the hammer with a toss of 206'-1.00" earlier this season. Espiricueta holds the top spots in the conference in the discus and javelin throw with tosses of 143’11.00” and 159’09.00”, respectively. She looks to repeat as the OVC javelin champion, a title she has claimed the last two seasons. The Redhawks will compete at the OVC Championships starting on Friday, May 6 in Murray, Ky. The meet concludes on Saturday, May 7. |
