Track & Field Teams Look to Improve Marks at Billy Hayes Invitational

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri State track and field team will send eight of their top individuals to Bloomington, Indiana this Friday, May 6 for the Billy Hayes Invitational hosted by Indiana University. The non-team scored meet held at Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex gives the Redhawks another opportunity to improve on their marks before participating in the NCAA West Regional on May 28.
The women's team will send five athletes including all three of their throwers. 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship qualifier Samantha Espiricueta headlines that bunch. She currently ranks 34th nationally in the javelin with a season's best throw of 155'-9.00". That throw also ranks 26th in the West Region.
Junior Brianna Egbuka looks to carry the momentum she captured at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships where she won the hammer throw title. She will compete in the discus, shot put as well as the hammer this weekend.
Senior Ashley Brewer will compete in the discus and shot put. She ranks 52nd nationally in the discus with a throw of 163'-3.00" and 86th in the shot with a distance of 48'-3.25". Her discus throw ranks 28th in the West Region.
Kahle recorded three top three finishes at the OVC's including a third place finish in the 200 meters. She ranks 39th in the West Region with a 200 meter time of 24.00.
Lewis will compete in the 400 meters where she ranks fourth in the OVC with a time of 55.83.
The men's team will send one thrower, one sprinter and a jumper to Bloomington. Senior Brandon Colbert will compete in three events on Friday. The OVC champion in the shot put and hammer throw has the OVC's best distances in the shot and discus.
He currently ranks 63rd nationally in both the shot (56'-8.75") and discus (175'-0.00"). In the hammer throw he ranks 68th with a toss of 194'-7.00". In the West Region, all three throws rank in the top-40.
Junior Tyler Terry made history last weekend as he became just the second athlete in OVC history to win triple jump and long jump titles during the same indoor and outdoor season. The six-time OVC champion, ranks 42nd in the West Region in the long jump (24'-1.50').
On the track, senior Chris Gill will compete in the 400 meters. The OVC's Male Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year ranks 53rd in the West Region with a time of 47.59.
The meet begins at 3:00 p.m. with the men's hammer throw and women's javelin in the field events. The Redhawks sprinters will not start competition till 5:35 with the women's 400 meters.
