Southeast Wins OVC Men's and Women's Track Titles

May 7, 2005

Clarksville, Tenn. - It was a big day for the Southeast Missouri State University men's and women's track teams as they both won conference outdoor titles on Saturday.

The women's team, which also won the OVC indoor title, scored 154 points to easily outdistance second place Eastern Illinois' 119 points. The men's team, which was second at the OVC indoor, won its first outdoor title since 1996, by edging second place Eastern Illinois 220.5 to 211.5.

Brian Knippen, named the Male Athlete of the Championships, paced the Southeast men with victories in the shot put and discus and a second place finish in the javelin. Knippen's victory in the shot put gave Southeast the early lead and his discus title put Southeast back on top after a 1-2-3 sweep by Eastern Illinois in the triple jump had given the Panthers a brief lead. Danile Jones was third in the discus while Redhawk Bill Nekula was fourth.

Miles Smith won the 400-meters on Saturday, placed third in the 200 and ran on both winning relay teams. Alonzo Nelson won both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles and ran on both winning relay teams.

Brooke Woodruff, the defending champion in the 800-meters won the 1500-meters on Saturday and came back to finish third in the 800. She also ran on the third place 1600-meter relay team.

Kathy Coleman, who won the long jump on Friday, was fourth in the triple jump, third in the 100-meter hurdles, fifth in the 100-meter dash. She also anchored the Redhawks winning 400-meter relay team.
