Track to Compete At Georgia Tech Athletes looking at last attempts to qualify for NCAA Championships.
May 14, 2002 CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - After strong performances at the Billy Hayes Invitational at Indiana University last Saturday, several members of the Southeast Missouri State University track team will compete on Friday and Saturday at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta. Pole vaulter Jaret Willi provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships with a winning vault of 17-feet ¾-inches at Indiana and will try to solidify a spot in the championship field with a vault of at least 17-5 on Saturday. Freshman discus thrower Heather Jenkins was also a winner at Indiana with throw of 156-feet-11-inches. She needs a throw of 164-feet to provisionally qualify for the NCAA finals. Jay Heddell, who is provisionally qualified in the shot put, failed to better his efforts in the shot or discus but did place second in the shot put with a throw of 57-4 ¼. "Willi and Heddell both need strong performances at Georgia Tech to get into the NCAA field," said Southeast coach Joey Haines. "In addition, we had several other very good performances at Indiana and we will take the same group plus hurdler Glenn Haley to Atlanta in a last chance effort to qualify for the NCAA finals. Haley and freshman David Herman will compete in the 110-meter hurdles where Herman had a career best of 14.38 last week. Jason Campbell will compete in the 400, Adam Shupe in the 800 and Shelton Scott will enter the triple jump. Courtney Haman, who was third in the javelin at Indiana, will not compete at Georgia Tech. |
