CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Three Southeast Missouri State female track and field athletes were named to the 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-District VII Women's Track and Field/Cross Country university division team as announced by award coordinators on Thursday. Senior Laura Van Hoevelaak was named to the first-team while seniors Amy Arteme and Jessie Thompson were second-team selections.

Van Hoevelaak obtained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in pre-medicine while at Southeast. She placed fourth in the 2002 OVC Indoor Track Championship in the 400-meters and was the champion in that event at the All Sport Classic. She also qualified for the prestigious Drake Relays in both the 400 hurdles and the 1600-meter relay. She is a four-time Southeast Scholar Athlete and three-time OVC Medal of Honor award winner, which recognizes the highest G.P.A. among all athletes in the conference in that sport.

Arteme, a first-team all-district at-large selection the past two seasons, carries a 3.85 G.P.A. in Dietetics. Arteme finished 15th at the 2001 OVC Cross Country Championships and was a two-time All-OVC selection for Cross Country. She finished fifth on the OVC Indoor Track Championships in the 3000-meters, second at the All Sport Classic in the 5000-meters and was the champion in the 10,000-meters at the Alabama Relays.

Thompson has a 3.91 G.P.A. in Education and placed 26th at the 2001 OVC Cross Country Championships. The also placed second at the 2002 All Sport Classic in the steeplechase. She is a four-time Southeast Scholar Athlete and won the Trombetta award for having the top G.P.A. among all senior female athletes.

The Verizon academic all-district team honors student-athletes who excel both on the playing field and in the classroom. By being named to the all-district team first-team, Van Hoevelaak will have her name placed on the national ballot for consideration for Academic All-American. The Verizon Academic awards are sponsored by and on voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA).

District VII includes schools in the states of Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Selections are open to student-athletes who have reached sophomore academic standing and carry at least a 3.20 G.P.A.

The three selections bring Southeast Missouri to eight total athletes who have made an all-district team this season. Nichole Thiele (soccer), Bryan Johnson (at-large golf), Amy Cole (at-large gymnastics), Emmy Kisaka (softball) and Katie Cerneka (softball) have each been honored earlier this year.
