Smith and Nelson Advance to Regional Finals

Bloomington, Ind. - Miles Smith and Alonzo Nelson of Southeast Missouri State both advanced to the NCAA Mideast Regional finals with standout performances on a rainy and windy opening day at Indiana University. They must finish in the top five during Saturday's finals to earn an automatic berth in the NCAA finals at Sacramento, Calif.

Smith won his heat in the 400-meters in a time of 45.94 which was the second fastest qualifying time. The fastest qualifying time was 45.87 by Terry Gaston of Arkansas.

Nelson was second in his heat of the 400-hurdles, but his time of 51.12 was the sixth fastest of the day to earn him a berth in Saturday's finals.

The Southeast men's 4 X 100-meter relay team just missed the finals, finishing ninth in a time of 40.49. Northwestern State claimed the final spot in the finals with a time of 40.43. The relay team included Smith, Chris Poindexter, Seth Schuster and Jon Jefferson.

Jason Theodorakas finished ninth in the javelin finals with a throw of 197-7 and Brooke Woodruff finished 10th in the women's 800-meters in a time of 2:08.75.

Brian Knippen fouled on all of his throws in the men's shot put.

In addition to Smith and Nelson's final events, the Redhawks 4 X 400-meter relay team will also run in the timed finals on Saturday.
