May 31, 2005

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Hurdler Alonzo Nelson and the 4 X 400-meter relay team from Southeast Missouri State University have earned at-large berths in the NCAA championships and will join 400-meter runner Miles Smith at the national finals in Sacramento, Calif.

Smith was an automatic qualifier by winning the NCAA Mideast Regional 400-meters on Saturday. His time of 45.16 is a new Southeast record and ranks fifth nationally.

Smith will also anchor the 4 X 400-meter relay team that was sixth at the Mideast Regional. The relay team that also includes Nelson, Chris Poindexter and Chaz Brown won an at-large berth with a time of 3:06.49 which ranks 16th nationally.

Nelson also earned an at-large berth in the 400-meter hurdles. He was seventh at the Mideast Regional, but his time of 50.77 ranks 18th nationally and earned him a berth in the national championships.

The four athletes will compete in Sacramento from June 8-11.
