Miles Smith Named All-American

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Miles Smith of Southeast Missouri State University has been named to the NCAA Division I Men's Outdoor Track and Field All-Amnerica Team selected by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Smith, who will be a senior next season, finished ninth in the NCAA 400-meter finals despite pulling a hamstring during the semi-finals. In Division I track and field, the top eight finishers in each event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships are accored All-America status. In the individual events, if one or more of the top eight finishers are of another nationalty, eight American-born athletes are selected in addition to any foreighn born All-Americans.

A gold medalist at last summer's World Championships, Smith had been selected to represent the United States at the Under 23 World Championships this summer in Brazil, but has withdrawn because of the hamstring injury. The All-America award is the third for Smith who was an outdoor All-American last season and an indoor and outdoor All-American in 2006.

Originally from St. Louis (Riverview Gardens), was also named to the All-Mideast Region team. Also selected for the All-Mideast Region team was hurdler Alonzo Nelson, discus thrower Heather Jenkins and the 4 X 400-meter relay team of Smith, Nelson, Walter Washington and Chris Poindexter.
