Miles Smith Races Into the Finals of the USA Track & Field 400 Meter

CARSON, CA. (Friday, June 24, 2005) All-American Miles Smith keeps on running despite being the quote-on-quote small fish in a big pond. The sophomore from St. Louis, Missouri qualified for the finals of the 400 meter dash friday evening at the prestigious USA Track and Field Championships held in the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Running in the second heat that featured Olympic 400-meter gold medalist Jeremy Wariner, Smith held his own and finished third in his heat behind Wariner and LaShawn Merritt of Team Nike with a time of 45.46.

His time tied for the fifth fastest time in the semi-final round with Olympic 400-meter bronze medalist Derrick Brew of Team Nike and propelled him into Saturday evening's 400-meter final.

Wariner once again posted the fastest time of the competition with a time of 44.82 followed by 2005 NCAA 400-meter champion Darold Williamson of Team Nike and formerly of Baylor University who ran a 44.83.

Smith finished ahead of Jamel Ashley of Mississippi State, who finished as the NCAA runner-up to Williamson ahead of Smith. Leaving Smith and Williamson as the only two NCAA 400-meter finalists to compete in tomorrows USA finals.

All-Americans Kelly Willie (LSU), Terry Gatson (Arkansas) and Kedar Inico (Oregon) all failed in their semi-final bids.

Smith needs to finish in the top five during Saturday's finals to be assured of a berth on the United States team in the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland although he may have already made the team by qualifying for the finals. The top three in Saturday's final will run the open 400 at the World Championships with the others slated for relay team duties.

Tomorrows finals will be televised on ESPN from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. (CDT) with the 400-meters scheduled for 4:12 p.m. (CDT). Live results are also available at http://www.usatf.org/.
