June 27, 2005

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State University track star Miles Smith (St. Louis, Mo./Riverview Gardens) has been selected for the United States team that will compete in the World Championships, August 6-14 in Helsinki, Finland.

Smith, who placed sixth in the USA Track & Field Championships on Saturday in Carson, Calif., will run on the Team USA 4 X 400-meter relay team.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment for Miles and he is excited about representing the United States at the World Championships," said Southeast coach Joey Haines. "He is bringing great recognition to our track program and to the University. Miles has had a great season and his world experience is just beginning."

Smith will continue to train at Southeast until he leaves for the World Championships. "We will work on lowering his time." Haines said. "He has run a 44.4 split on our relay and running rested he should be able to lower that time."

Smith, the Ohio Valley Conference and NCAA Mideast Regional champion, placed fifth in the NCAA finals and sixth at the USA Track & Field Championships. His personal best in the open 400 is 45.16. He ran 45.25 at the USA finals on Saturday.

Miles Smith and his coach Joey Haines will hold a press conference on Tuesday, 2 p.m., at the Alumni Center at Southeast. For further information contact Ron Hines at (573) 651-2294.
