Redhawks Track and Field Ready To Roll at Arkansas State

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri State men's and women's track and field teams will open their 2007-08 season this weekend at the Arkansas State Kickoff Classic in Jonesboro, Ark.

The event will be held on Saturday at the ASU Convocation Center with field events starting at 8:30 a.m. Preliminary races for the sprints and hurdles begin at 11 a.m. Finals for all running events are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Competing schools include Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Memphis, Mississippi College, Lincoln, Central Arkansas, Christian Brothers, Lindenwood, Mississippi, Harding and Tulane.

The men's team returns several veterans including Miles Smith in the sprints, who did not compete last season due to injury, Brandon Colbert in the throws and John Berry in the jumps. Colbert and Berry were both 2007 NCAA regional qualifiers in their respective events.

"We have a talented group of athletes," said Coach Joey Haines. "We have had three months of intense training to prepare for the upcoming season. Our athletes are ready to go."

On the women's side, key performers returning include distance runner Juli Koenegstein, thrower Lindsey Hearne and sprinters Orie Ibe and Precious Elliot.
