Track and Field Kick off the Indoor Season

Dec. 3, 2004

Practicing since September, the Southeast Track and Field teams are ready for competition. They will open the season this Saturday at Arkansas State in Jonesboro, AR. Both teams utilize this meet for newcomers to get a feel of competition at the collegiate level and to give everyone an ideal about their progress after their hard work and training during the preseason.

The annual Arkansas State Invitational hosts strong competition including Ole Miss, Jackson State and University of Memphis. The Southeast women are working for a third straight outdoor OVC championship while the men are looking for their first since 1996. Coach Joey Haines feels this team's level of talent is the best it's been since entering Division I.

"The men and women both have been working extremely hard. We've had a great fall in terms of attitude and dedication. When you combine outstanding talent with hard work and dedication, big things happen," said Haines.

The entire team won't be in attendance for the first meet. The distance runners are taking a break from the Cross Country season and many of the jumpers are sitting out until competition at SIU-Carbondale. Southeast will compete this weekend at ASU and next weekend at SIU-Carbondale before the Christmas break.
