Southeast Track and Field Teams Begin Competition at Arkansas State

Dec. 5, 2003

Cape Girardeau, MO (December 5, 2003) The Southeast Missouri State Track and Field Teams will travel to Arkansas State on Sunday to mark the beginning of the 2003-2004 track season. This is the meet that all the Southeast track and field athletes have been looking forward to since September.

"The athletes have been looking forward to competition since we began our fall training in September," said Southeast Track and Field Coach Joey Haines. "I'm ready to see them compete."

This first meet of the season for Southeast will feature many nationally ranked Division I schools. Just a few of the competitors will be Ole Miss and the University of Memphis.

"This weekend will give the freshman a chance to experience a Division I track meet," said Haines. "It will also give us a chance to evaluate our fall program and see where we need to go from there."

This meet will also give Southeast an opportunity to compete before Christmas break and keep them motivated and working hard over the break.

"This meet at Arkansas State is the first piece of the puzzle, working toward the OVC Championships," said Haines. "Winning the OVC Championships are our main goals, and this meet is the first step in getting our athletes there."

Haines has high expectations for senior Jay Heddell in the shot put and junior Heather Jenkins in the shot and weight competitions in the meet on Sunday. Haines believes that these two athletes are capable of bringing home first place finishes in their events.

The distance runners will not be competing in this first meet of the season due to being in a rejuvenation cycle in their training. They will begin competing after the Christmas break.
