No. 22 South Alabama Knocks Off Indians Pitcher Tommy Thomas unable to pick a win in his third try, as the Jaguars bounce Southeast 2-1 with late inning heroics.
Feb. 24, 2001 Mobile, Ala. - The late inning heroics were experienced by another team other than Southeast today, as No. 22 South Alabama topped Southeast Missouri State, 2-1. With the score knotted up 1-all in the bottom of the eighth, USA's Ryan Mulhern singled to left to drive in a waiting Tim Merritt. Merritt was walked in the top of the inning by starting pitcher Tommy Thomas, who was searching for his first win in three trys. Each of those appearances, Thomas has not received the run support to notch the win, which was the case today. Reliever Brandon Smith gave up the hit to Mulhern, but the run was charged to Thomas. Jeffrey Hilz came into to shut down the next 1.2 innings. Southeast had numerous opportunities to put runs on the board. In their own portion of the eighth, the Indians left the bases juiced. Their only run of the day came in the third win Vern Hatton scored after Clemente Bonilla's single caused a throwing error by the rightfielder. Thomas stuck out seven in 7.1 innings of work. He gave up six hits and was charged with both runs scored. Hilz remains perfect, while strking out one. The Indians finish off their two-game stand against USA, tomorrow. |
