USA Escapes With Another Win In Rain-Shorten Game The Jaguars post six runs on the board vs. Southeast one in five-inning contest.
Feb. 25, 2001 Mobile, Ala. - No. 22 South Alabama seemed to find its offense today, as the Jaguars defeated Southeast Missouri State, 6-1. The game was called after five full innings due to rain. Southeast (5-4) kept the game tied 1-all through four innings, but the Jags lit up the board with three runs in the fourth and another two in the fifth. Starting pitcher Brad Purcell was handed the loss in his first decision of the season. He finished the day with four hits, four runs - three of which were earned - and three strikeouts. The Jags jumped on Indian ace Jeffrey Hilz, who had not been touched with an earned run going into the game. USA collected three hits and two earned runs against Hilz. Short stop Zach Borowiak was responsible for Southeast's only run. His single drove in a waiting Denver Stuckey. Clemente Bonilla notched his fifth double of the year. Southeast was short on offense, reaching base with just five hits and one hit-by-pitch. USA's Caleb Crosby went all five innings in the five-hitter. He struck out five Indians and walked no one. This was his first win of the season. South Alabama is now 8-0 at Stanky Field, its home stadium. The Jags are 10-2 overall, with the losses coming against nationally-ranked Alabama and Auburn. Southeast finishes out its seven-game road swing this Wednesday, the 28th, with a 2 p.m. date at Arkansas State. |
