Box Score

Memphis, Tenn. (March 1, 2003) - The Southeast Missouri State Indian baseball team split a double header from the University of Memphis today as they won the first game 5-0, but dropped the second 6-1. The two teams will play the finale Sunday at 1 p.m.

Game one was scoreless until the Tribe's half of the seventh inning when they exploded for five runs. Sophomore designated hitter Eric Hoffman started off the inning with a long home run to right field, his first of the season. Freshman Aaron Fangman was hit by a pitch and after a strikeout, junior centerfielder Seth Moulton singled up the middle and advanced Fangman to second.

Senior second baseman Justin Christian then singled through the left side scoring Fangman and moving Moulton to second. Memphis made a pitching change, but it didn't stop the bleeding. Moulton and Christian pulled off a double-steal and senior catcher Tristen McDonald grounded off the pitcher to the second baseman for the second out of the inning. Moulton then scored on a wild pitch and Christian moved up to third. After a walk to senior left fielder Brian Hopkins, senior shortstop Zach Borowiak doubled to right field scoring both Hopkins and Christian for the game's final two runs.

Senior lefty Tim Alvarez pitched perfectly in the game. He pitched a complete game four hit shutout, striking out one. Borowiak had a double and two RBI's as Moulton, Christian and Hoffman each had two hits.

Game two saw the Tribe get out on top in the second inning as McDonald doubled to right field to start the inning. Hopkins singled through the right side advancing McDonald to third, and Borowiak followed that with a single of his own to score McDonald.

Memphis scored twice in their half of the second as they got a two-run homer from Kyle Scott. They would score four more times in the fourth. Scott started things off with a single and Indian pitcher James Beever walked the next two to load the bases. Lewis then doubled to center scoring two. Senior pitcher Donnie Fuller then came in to relieve Beever. Fuller then gave up a three run homer to House but that would be the last runs either team would score.

The Tribe got an RBI from Borowiak as Moulton and McDonald both had two hits on the day. With the exception of his last two batters, Beever pitched well today as he went three and two thirds, striking out two and allowing only three hits. Fuller allowed only one hit in his two in a third, but it was a big home run.

Both teams are back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. for a single nine inning game.
