Southeast Baseball Loses Tough Contest To Ark. State
Jonesboro, Ark. (March 4, 2003) - The Southeast Missouri State baseball team lost its fifth game of the season today to the Indians of Arkansas State 7-3. The loss moves the Tribe to 2-5 on the season while ASU moves to 4-7. ASU opened up the scoring when in the third, Indian starter Jon Nourie tried to pick off lead-off batter Matt Rogelstatd. Nourie, however, threw the ball into the right field corner and Rogelstad, who was running on the play, motored all the way home for the game's first run. Nourie settled down and pitched five masterful innings, allowing only the one unearned run and just two hits. The Tribe got a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. McDonald walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch in the fifth and was drove home on another wild pitch after being advanced to third by junior first baseman Gary Gilbert. Junior infielder Wade Hansford led off the sixth with a single to center. Senior third baseman Denver Stuckey followed him by reaching on an error by the pitcher as he was trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt. Hansford advanced to third on the play. Two wild pitches later, Hansford had scored and Stuckey was sitting at third. Senior second baseman Justin Christian hit into a fielder's choice, second to home, as Stuckey was out at the plate. Christian made up for it as he stole second and later scored on a double from senior shortstop Zach Borowiak. Senior pitcher Donnie Fuller came into the game in the sixth with a 3-1 lead for Nourie. He gave up a home run to right fielder Neal Chambers for his only hit and run of the inning. The game remained scoreless until the eighth inning when senior pitcher James Beever came in to relieve with a 3-2 lead. He gave up to singles to start the inning and then a walk to load the bases. Left fielder Blake Denischuck then came through and singled through the left side scoring two runners. Another single and a throwing error from right fielder David Lawson allowed two more runs to score. The final run of the inning came on another error. After strong pitching from Nourie and Fuller, the Indians Bullpen gave up five runs, four earned in the eighth inning. Borowiak and Hansford both had two hits with Borowiak getting the team's lone RBI on the day. Southeast will now head off to Hattiesburg, Miss. as they will take on the Eagles of Southern Miss in a three game series this weekend. They then come home next Monday as they open the home schedule with a 2 p.m. game against Middle Tennessee State at Capaha Field. |
