Alvarez Pitches Second-Straight Complete Game in Win
Hattiesburg, Miss. (March 7, 2003) - The Southeast Missouri State baseball team scored two runs in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth and one each in the sixth, eighth, and ninth innings today while senior lefty Tim Alvarez pitched his second-straight complete game en route to a 9-2 victory over the Eagles of Southern Miss today in Hattiesburg. The Tribe started their scoring barrage in the second as senior catcher Tristen McDonald took a 2-2 pitch through the right side for a single. Senior shortstop Zach Borowiak then doubled to right center advancing McDonald to third. Senior left fielder Brian Hopkins got the Indians on the board when he singled home McDonald. Sophomore designated hitter Eric Hoffman then hit a deep fly to left field for a sac fly. Southeast got another in the third when senior second baseman Justin Christian hit his third home run of the season over the center field fence. The Tribe got three more in the fourth when junior first baseman Gary Gilbert started things off by knocking a hit up the middle. Hoffman followed with a hit and then advanced along with Gilbert on a wild pitch. Freshman Aaron Fangman loaded the bases when he walked. A passed ball advanced all the runners allowing Gilbert to score. After a ground out, junior center fielder Seth Moulton reached on an error allowing both Fangman and Hoffman to score. Southern Miss got its only two runs in the fifth as that got two hits and a sacrifice bunt to score its first run. They then got another hit for the second run, as they got three hits in the inning, leaving two on base. The Tribe scattered three more runs over the final four innings as Alvarez mesmerized the bats of the Southern Miss hitters. He struck out nine, while walking three and pitched all nine innings. Southeast got two hits each from McDonald, Hopkins, Gilbert and Hoffman. Hopkins, Hoffman and Gilbert all had an RBI, while Christian had the big blast with a shot over the center field wall. The two teams will play again tomorrow at 2 p.m. and again on Sunday at 1 p.m. The win moves the Indians to 3-5 overall and drops the Eagles to 9-4 on the season. |
