`Bama Bats Slowed by Southeast
March 13, 2004
Tuscaloosa, Ala. - With the exception of Friday night's nine run sixth inning, the Southeast pitching staff has been able to keep the Alabama Crimson Tide (13-4) offense in check. Saturday, Southeast starter Anthony Maupin (1-2) pitched eight innings and allowed just two runs in a complete game loss to 'Bama. Southeast lost the pitcher's duel 2-0, as Alabama narrowly outhit the Indians 6-5. The only scoring occurred in the fifth and seventh innings when Maupin allowed a single run in each. Southeast (4-7) had a pair of chances to score against Alabama starter Wade LeBlanc (4-1). In the fourth, Frankie Montiel doubled to right center with one out, but LeBlanc struck out Freddie Lopez and Aaron Fangman to end the inning. The Indians loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth inning but did not score as Ernie Bracamonte lined out to right to end the inning. All in all, Southeast left six runners on base. For LeBlanc, it is his second straight complete-game shutout for the Tide. Montiel had the best day at the plate for Southeast, going 2-for-4. He has now upped his batting average to .318 on the season, and leads the team in doubles after hitting his fourth against the Tide. Leadoff hitter Eric Horstman reached base twice from the leadoff position, going 1-for-3 with a single and a walk. The junior left fielder continues to lead the team with a .415 batting average. Southeast will attempt one more time to pick up a win against Alabama tomorrow at 2 p.m. to close out the three-game set. |
