April 8, 2006
By Nathan Saverino, Redhawks Sports Information CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Saturday, April 08, 2006) - Following a 9-3 loss in game one of a doubleheader with Jacksonville State on Saturday, the Redhawks were able to take the second match from the Gamecocks. Southeast rallied for six runs in the sixth inning to come back from a 6-2 deficit. The win was just their second victory on the road this season. Southeast (12-16, 4-4 OVC) scored two runs out of the box in the second game with the help of two errors. The Gamecocks (14-17, 4-4 OVC) earned a 6-2 advantage after scoring two runs in the second and fourth innings and single runs in the third and fifth, including home runs delivered by Garrett Bass and Allen Rose. Aaron Rave kicked things off with a one out single in the top of the sixth, and Jacksonville State starter Jon Clements loaded the bases with two consecutive walks. Asif Shah cleared the bases with a pinch hit three-run double to bring the `Hawks within one. Omar Padilla and Jordan Payne followed with RBI singles, and Levi Olson capped off the rally with an RBI double to center. Anthony Maupin (3-3) picked up the win for the Redhawks, and recorded his third consecutive complete game in as many starts. He struck out four batters in 7.0 innings. Southeast struggled to take advantage of their scoring opportunities in the first half of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon, stranding 12 runners on-base. In the fourth inning, Phillip Riley and Daniel Schuh both were thrown out at the plate attempting to score. Andrew Johnson managed to pass safely on a passed ball in the inning, in between the two outs at home. Southeast also scored a run in the third and one in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as Jacksonville State took advantage of Southeast errors. The Gamecocks scored three in the fifth, three in the seventh, and another in the eighth. Three of their nine runs were unearned in the 9-3 victory over Southeast Missouri State. Starter Jamie McAlister (4-5) worked 6.1 innings, and gave up seven runs on eight hits, but only four were earned. He also struck out four and walked only one. James Hibbard was responsible for the two other Gamecock runs in an inning of work. Padilla extended his hitting streak to seven games with two-hit performances in each game of the doubleheader. He scored a run in each contest, and also drove in an rBI in the second game. Olson continues to swing a hot bat, having hit in five consecutive games. The senior catcher was 4-5 in game one with an RBI, and 1-4 in the second. His RBI double was his team-leading eighth double of the season. Padilla and Olson will lead the Redhawks tomorrow in an attempt to pick-up the first series win on the road this year. Derek Herbig will get the start on the mound for Southeast.
