Tribe Takes Two From Samford

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri State baseball team picked up a pair of wins today against Samford, winning both ends of a doubleheader. The Tribe took game one 7-5, and game two 9-1. Southeast (15-15, 5-3 OVC) combined for 23 hits on the day, and junior starting pitcher Anthony Maupin went the distance in game two to lead Southeast to its third consecutive win. With the wins, Southeast improves its home record to 12-3 on the season. In game one, Samford (4-22, 0-7 OVC) took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Southeast starter Mike Fitch allowed the runs, and two more in the seventh before giving way to junior closer Brad Smith with two outs in the seventh inning. Smith closed the door on the Bulldogs to earn his fifth save of the season, but only after Southeast scored a run in the fourth inning and six more in the sixth to win it 7-5. Fitch (3-2) earned the win in the game as he allowed five runs, while striking out five and walking five. Junior designated hitter Eric Hoffman homered for southeast, going 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Juniors Eric Horstman and Ernie Bracamonte each went 2-for-5. Horstman brought home three Southeast runners with his bat, upping his RBI total to 18 on the season. Senior Gary Gilbert went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. In game two, Horstman had three more hits, going 3-for-4 with a double, stolen base and three runs scored. Bracamonte and Gilbert each went 2-for-3 in the game and each had a double. Bracamonte drove in three runs while scoring twice while Gilbert drove in one and scored three times. Hoffman also had another strong game at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Junior Bryan Kurt also had a pair of hits, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Southeast pushed three runs across in the first and second innings and brought home three more in the sixth, and junior Anthony Maupin (4-4) went the distance for the third time this year to lead Southeast to the 9-1 win. Anthony Maupin was nearly perfect, going all seven innings without allowing a walk. He struck out seven batters and gave up just one run on four hits. Southeast looks for the sweep tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 p.m. at Capaha Field. |
