Southeast Falls to Samford in 15 Inning Marathon

April 16, 2006

Box Score

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Saturday April 14, 2006) Southeast failed to win the three game series against Samford earlier today losing to 8-6. The game featured eight pitchers across 15 innings that lasted 4 hours and 50 minutes. Samford broke out for two runs after five innings of scoreless baseball to take the final game of the series.

Southeast started right out of the gate scoring three in the first inning after a Phillip Riley single and a two RBI double by Andrew Johnson. Samford then tied the game at three after the top of the third inning.

In the bottom of the third inning Southeast took the lead scoring off of a Riley sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. Olsen increased the lead to 6-3 with a home run in the bottom of the 5th. Levi Olson finished the game 5-5 with one RBI and three runs scored raising his season average to .410.

Southeast looked like they were going to hold onto victory having a 6-3 lead going into the top of the ninth inning but Samford had other plans. Josh Parham, who relieved starter Derek Herbig in the fourth, took the mound with every intention of finishing the game. After an RBI double by Parker Gargis and with one out Parham induced a ground ball by hitter Garrett Rice to third but it was bobbled by Philip Riley to allow John Morgan to score. In what would have to be described as déjà vu Parham forced Luke Peavy into a ground ball to Riley but another error allowed Kyle Krebs to score the tying run.

Coming into pitch the extra innings was third baseman Philip Riley. Riley pitched 5 scoreless innings aided by excellent defense by Southeast. Samford pitcher Parker Gargis came up and lifted a pitch into left center field and Dustin Pritchett went on to climb the wall and bring back a home run to keep the game tied.

Samford finally scored off of a Parker Gargis two RBI double in the top of the 15th to take the lead. Gargis went on to pitch the second half of the inning to earn his second win of the season.

Southeast had strong performances by catcher Levi Olsen who had 5 hits. Andrew Graham was 2-5 with 2 runs scored. Andrew Johnson continued his clutch hitting going 1-4 with 2 RBIs on the day. Riley was 2-6 with 2 RBIs The loss for Southeast was credited to Phillip Riley (1-4) and Parker Gargis (2-0) took the win

Southeast falls to 14-20 overall and 5-7 in the OVC while Samford improves to 20-16 and 10-2 in the conference. Southeast will not play until the 22nd where they take on Austin Peay in a double-header starting at 3:00 p.m. at Capaha Field.
