Govs Down Redhawks, 11-2

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - (Sunday, April 17, 2005) The Redhawks baseball team fell behind early and was stymied by the Austin Peay pitching staff as they dropped the rubber game of their three-game series 11-2 Sunday afternoon at Raymond C. Hand Park. The Redhawks (13-21, 4-8 OVC) gave up six runs in the first two innings and couldn't put together any offense as Govs starter Shawn Kelley went 7.0 innings allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out seven. The Govs (21-14, 7-5 OVC) added three more runs in the fifth as they knocked around Redhawks pitchers Andrew Johnson, Ryan Forsyth and Josh Parham. The Redhawks finally got on the scoreboard in their half of the sixth. Jordan Payne collected his fourth hit of the series when he doubled to left center. Eric Horstman followed with a double to right to plate Payne to make the score 9-1. In the seventh the Redhawks added another run when Freddy Lopez singled to lead-off the inning. Designated hitter Levi Olson then doubled to left to drive in Lopez for the Redhawks final run of the game. The Govs poured on two more runs in the their half of the seventh for the final margin of 11-2.
Johnson (0-3) was collared with the loss and Kelley (3-2) was credited with the victory. The Govs scored their 11 runs on 13 hits and five walks. The Redhawks were held to eight hits and only one free pass. Five Govs batters finished with two hits as the fifth thru ninth batters of the order provided the damage going a combined 9-19. Horstman went 3-4 and Lopez finished 2-4 to lead the Redhawks. Ernie Bracamonte saw his personal season-high hitting streak snapped at 15 games. The Redhawks conclude their eight-game road trip as they head out of conference to face regional rival Arkansas State on Tuesday, April 19 in Jonesboro, Arkansas. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. |
