Tribe Runs Into Tough Panther Pitching in Double-Header Loss
Cape Girardeau, Mo. (April 18, 2003) - The Southeast Missouri State Indian baseball team ran into some brilliant pitching today as the Panthers of Eastern Illinois held the Tribe to just five runs in two games on the day as EIU swept the double header by the scores of 5-1 and 5-4. Southeast falls to 18-13 on the season and 3-4 in the OVC, while EIU moves to 17-18 and 4-3 in the conference. Game one parlayed the conference's two best pitchers in Tim Alvarez and EIU's Damon White. Coming into the game the two were first and second in ERA. Both pitched as advertised as neither gave up a hit until shortstop Zach Borowiak busted a single up the middle in the fourth. Southeast got on board first in the fifth as designated hitter David Lawson took a 1-0 pitch to dead center field over the 400 mark for his fourth home run of the season. Eastern got a run back in the sixth and ended Alvarez's perfect game as Danny Jordan singled and Pete Stone walked behind him. Both moved up on a balk, and nine hole hitter Jeff Camman flied out to deep left field to drive in Jordan for the Panthers' first run of the game. Alvarez would recover and get out of the inning. The Panthers got right back on Alvarez in the seventh as with one out, Kirk Walters tripled to right center and scored when Aaron Shelbourne singled up the middle. Alvarez then gave up only his second homer of the year as DH Nolan Cork homerd to right center. Jordan then followed up that shot with a long ball of his own to left center to make it a 5-1 lead and that's how the game would end as White held the Indians scoreless the rest of the game for his third win of the season. With the win, White takes over the OVC ERA race as he moves to 1.85 just four hundredths in front of Alvarez's 1.89. Southeast got out on top in the first inning in game two as Brian Hopkins doubled to right field with one out and second baseman Justin Christian took a 1-1 pitch to deep left field for his sixth homer of the season. Eastern answered back in the third with a run of their own as Shellbourne had an RBI single. Both teams scored twice in the fourth to make the score 4-3 Southeast. The Tribe got things stared as Seth Moulton doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a passed ball. Tristen McDonald then singled to left center to drive in Moulton and knock Panther Starter Matt Tyson out of the game. Micah Gray came in to pitch and Gary Gilbert sacrificed McDonald up to second. Gray then walked Aaron Fangman and Stuckey back-to-back. The Tribe then got the go ahead run on a wild pitch. Southeast starter Jon Nourie was looking solid as he left the game after four innings with the lead and looking for a win. EIU, however, got another run in the sixth as catcher Bret Pignatiello singled on a 2-2 pitch to drive in the tying run. Both teams remained scoreless in the final two innings as the game went to extras. In the top of the eighth, Eastern's Pete Stone took a 2-1 pitch to left center over the 380 sign for the game-winning run. Justin Christian was the only Indian to have a multiple-hit game as he had two with a homer in the first game. He had two RBI in the second game with a run scored. Tristen McDonald and David Lawson had the Tribe's only other RBI on the afternoon. Both teams will get back at it tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. |
