Tribe Gets Five Homers, 22 Runs In Rout of EIU

Box Score

Cape Girardeau, Mo. (April 19, 2003) - After having their offense shut down in two games yesterday by Eastern Illinois University, the Southeast Missouri Indian baseball team busted out today and scored 22 runs including five long balls in a 22-9 defeat of EIU. Southeast improves to 19-13, 4-4 in the OVC, while EIU falls t o17-19, 4-5 in the conference.

The Tribe scored 10 in the first, two in the third, seven in the fourth and three in the eighth as they rolled to the easy win. Eastern Illinois was on their third pitcher and facing the ninth Indian batter in the first before they recorded the first out of the inning.

Denver Stuckey started things off with a double to left center. Brian Hopkins then hit his eighth homer of the year to begin the scoring. In all, the Tribe would send 14 men to the plate, score 10, have seven hits and leave a man on. Tristen McDonald, Brian Hopkins, Justin Christian, Zach Borowiak and Gary Gilbert would have RBI's in the inning.

Both teams were scoreless in the second as Eastern scored three in the third to make the score 10-4. Southeast, however, got two more back in the third as Hopkins hit his second homer of the game, both to center field.

The Tribe got seven more in the fourth as with a man on, Seth Moulton hit his fifth homer of the season as he took a 1-0 pitch to left center and banged it off the top and over the wall. David Lawson then singled and Gilbert hit his second homer of the year behind him. Borowiak then had a two-RBI double to left center scoring Christian and Aaron Fangman. Moulton came up for the second time in the inning and drove in Borowiak for his third RBI of the game.

Eastern would get one more in the sixth and four in the eighth. The big blow for the panthers came when first baseman Aaron Shelbourne took a full-count pitch to deep left center for a three-run homer.

Southeast got its final three runs of the game in the eighth as Wade Hansford singled to start the inning and Borowiak homered to deep left field for his seventh long ball of the season. Jason Theodorakos then pinch hit for Lawson and promptly nailed his first hit of his college career in his first official at bat. He would move to second on a passed ball and score when right fielder Ryan Dinkleman knocked in his first RBI with his first hit as an Indian singling to right field.

Southeast had monster days at the plate today, none better than Borowiak. The senior shortstop was 4-6 on the day with five RBI, three runs scored, a homer and a double. He was just a triple shy of the cycle. Hopkins had two homers and three RBI to go along with three runs scored. Christian was 3-4 with a couple of RBI and three runs scored. Moulton had a homer and two runs scored to go with a 3-4 day at the plate and three RBI. Stuckey was 3-7 on the day with two runs scored. The seven at bats tied a school record for at bats in a game, with Steve Goodman from 1996.

Southeast set season-highs offensively in the game with 48 at bats, 22 runs, 23 hits, 18 RBI, five home runs and 40 total bases.

Bill Clayton pitched six innings and garnered his first victory as an Indian. He allowed five runs, all earned while striking out six. EIU used seven pitchers in the game.

Southeast now travels to Manhattan, Kansas to take on the Wildcats of Kansas State University on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and Wednesday at 3 p.m. They will then get back to OVC play as they continue an 11-game road swing with a three-game set at Austin Peay next weekend.
