Indians Split Double-Header With Austin Peay
Clarksville, Tenn. (April 26, 2003) - The Southeast Missouri State Indian baseball team picked up a split with the Govs of Austin Peay today as they won game one 9-3 but dropped the nightcap, 4-2. Southeast falls to 21-14, 5-5 in the OVC, while Peay moves to 17-22 and 6-3-1 in the conference. Peay scored first in its half of the first inning off of Tim Alvarez. Southeast, however picked up the lefty with two runs in the second. Gary Gilbert had a sacrifice fly for the first run, driving in Tristen McDonald. Aaron Fangman then singled to drive in Seth Moulton. Neither team scored till the fifth when the Tribe picked up two. Brian Hopkins doubled to start things off and Justin Christian walked behind him. McDonald walked behind them and Moulton then sacrificed in Hopkins and Christian scored on a throwing error by the pitcher. The Tribe got three more in the sixth courtesy of a Christian and he hit another in the eighth as the team rolled to the 9-3 victory. Alvarez picked up the complete-game victory as he allowed just three runs, all earned, while striking out six and walking just three. He did, however, hit six batters. Christian had four RBI on the day as he was 2-4 with three runs scored. Moulton, Gilbert and Denver Stuckey all had RBI's for the Indians. Scoring was much more sparse in the second game. Southeast got on the board in the first inning as Stuckey reached on an error to start the game. Hopkins then walked behind him and Borowiak hit a deep fly to sacrifice in Stuckey. Peay got two runs in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth. Southeast had the bases loaded with no one out in the top of the seventh as Stuckey, Hopkins, and Christian singled to start the inning. Borowiak was hit by a pitch forcing in a run. Then Peay closer Jeff Mault came in and went to work, getting McDonald to strike out, Moulton to fly out on the infield and Lawson to foul out to end the game. Jon Nourie started the game for the Tribe and pitched four innings striking out four while he allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits. Ryan Forsyth and James Beever pitched the final two innings. Christian was 3-4 in the game, as Gilbert and Hopkins each had two hits. Borowiak had two RBI in the game. Southeast will finish out the series tomorrow as they play a single nine inning game at 2 p.m. |
