Southeast Bats are Silent at Best of the Midwest Tournament
April 25, 2006
By Nathan Saverino, Redhawks Sports Information CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Tuesday, April 25, 2006) - Heading into today's game against the University of Kansas at the Best of the Midwest Tourament in Kansas City, Kan., Southeast was looking for its first ever victory against the Kansas. The Redhawks could not get anything going with the bat against starter Brendan McNamara as they fell 6-0 in a seven-inning contest. Southeast hitters were only able to muster four hits in the ball game. Kansas (30-16) starter McNamara dominated the Redhawks (15-23) all day long, retiring 10 batters on strikes and only allowing one walk. Allowing only four hits to Southeast, all of them were singles. After 6.1 innings, Andy Marks retired both batters he faced to finish the seventh inning before the game was called due to rain. Meanwhile, SEMO starter Derek Herbig kept the Redhawks close through 4.2 innings of work. Herbig allowed just one run through the first four innings, until four Kansas hits and two Southeast errors in the fifth lead to five unearned runs scored by the Jayhawks. Freshman Michael Kraatz pitched in his first game of the season today, relieving Herbig with two outs in the fourth inning. He worked 1.1 innings and allowed two base hits. Southeast will attempt to complete a three-game season sweep of Missouri tomorrow in their last game at the Best of the Midwest tournament. Southeast defeated Missouri 3-2 with a walk-off home run from Daniel Schuh at Capaha Field on March 29. In Columbia, the Redhawks defeated the Tigers 9-5 on April 12. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m., and you can hear the game in its entirety on 1220 KGIR or on the internet at www.kgir.com. |
