Redhawks Fall to Salukis 7-3
April 27, 2005
CARBONDALE, Ill. (Wednesday, April 27, 2005) Despite collecting 10 hits including two homeruns, the Redhawks could not take advantage of numerous scoring situations as they lost a non-conference game against regional rival Southern Illinois University at Carbondale 7-3 on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon at Abe Martin Field. The Redhawks (16-23) ended up stranding 11 baserunners in the game and saw their strong starting pitching performances over the weekend come to an end. Starter Casey Johnson (1-4) struggled in his sixth start of the season as he labored through 4.2 innings giving up seven runs on eight Saluki hits and walked four. The Salukis (26-15) struck first with a run in the bottom of the first. The Redhawks responded with a solo homerun by freshman James Clayton to knot the game at one apiece. For Clayton it was his first career homerun. The Salukis got the run back in their half of the second and later added two more runs in the third to pull ahead 4-1. In the fourth Chris Gibson singled in Frank Montiel to cut the lead to two, 4-2. The Salukis then broke the game wide open with two outs in the fifth when Dean Cademartori hit a Johnson pitch over the centerfield fence for a three-run homer and a 7-2 lead. The Redhawks managed to get one run back the following inning when Levi Olson hit his first career homer off of Shane Garner making it 7-3.
Both team's bullpens then shut down each others offense as the final three-innings were scoreless. Ryan Terry (3-0) won his third game of the season, while Johnson was credited with the loss. Three Redhawks recorded multi-hit games with Montiel and Freddy Lopez each went 2-4. Gibson finished 2-3. Eric Horstman went 1-5 to extend his hitting streak to nine games. The Redhawks return to OVC action this weekend when they travel to Eastern Kentucky for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30 at 12:00 p.m. and concludes with a single game on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. |
