Walk-Off Homer Dooms Tribe As Mizzou Gets 30th Win
Columbia, Mo. (April 30, 2003) - A walk off homer from Ryan Rallo with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the ninth capped off a five run ninth, and lifted the No. 24 Missouri Tigers past Southeast Missouri by the score of 11-10. Southeast falls to 22-15, while Mizzou moves to 30-15. Missouri took an early lead as they hit up Indian starter Jon Nourie for two runs in the first. Centerfielder Jayce Tingler singled to start the game. After a strikeout, Tingler stole second, then third and was driven home, when Ryan Rallo singled to right field. Rallo moved up to second on a fielder's choice and scored on a balk. The Tigers scored two more times in the second as Nourie walked the lead off hitter. Hernandez then advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a ground out. Rallo then hit a soaring shot over the left field bullpen to make the Tiger lead 4-0. Southeast would answer back. With one out, Denver Stuckey singled up the middle and Brian Hopkins hit a deep drive to dead center field for his 12th home run of the season. The Tribe didn't stop there as they got two more in the fifth. Aaron Fangman singled to right field to start the inning. After two quick outs, Justin Christian singled to left field moving Fangman up to second. Zach Borowiak then singled to left as Fangman raced around third to score. Gary Gilbert then reached on an error by the second baseman as Christian scored the second run of the inning and tie the game at four. The Tigers got a lone run in the fifth as Ian Kinsler hit a solo shot to left field. Southeast broke the game open in the sixth. With one out, Seth Moulton homered off of former junior college teammate Andy Shipman to tie the game. After another out, Stuckey doubled to right center and Hopkins walked behind him. Both runners then moved up a base as Stuckey scored when the Tiger catcher tried to pick off Hopkins at first and threw the ball down the line. The Tribe got three more runs in the seventh to take a 9-5 lead. Borowiak led off the inning and hit a long, towering fly ball to deep left center for his eighth homer of the season. Moulton then doubled home two more runs. Wade Hansford pinch hit for Dave Lawson in the eighth inning and hit a long shot to left center for his first homer of his Indian career. The lead stood at 10-6 going into the bottom of the ninth, before Mizzou exploded. After a lead off strikeout, the next batter walked. Then a single through the right side moved the runner up to third. What happened next set the tide. Tingler dragged a bunt past pitcher Stan Skakalski as Gilbert threw the ball into right field allowing one run to score. Skakalski next struck out a batter for the second out. The next batter then drilled a ground ball off the chest of Skakalski and Stan tried to recover, but threw the ball down the right field line, allowing both runners to score and the tying run to get to second base. Skakalski would leave and the Tribe brought in Gary Gilbert to try for the save. Ryan Rallo came up for the Tigers and delivered in the clutch, driving a 1-2 slider into the Tiger bullpen for a walk-off homer as the Tigers won, 11-10. Despite the loss, Southeast had monster games offensively. They got homers from Hopkins, his 12th, Borowiak, his 9th, Moulton, his 6th and Hansford, his first. Moulton was 2-5 with three RBI and a run scored while Borowiak was 4-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Hopkins and Borowiak each had two RBI for the Tribe. Ryan Forsyth and Stan Skakalski pitched brilliantly for the Indians in relief of starter Jon Nourie. Forsyth went three and a third allowing only two hits and one earned run. Skakalski went three and two third allowing only four hits and five runs, three earned, while striking out five. One noticing flaw in the pitching was walks. In the first loss to Missouri earlier in the season, the Tribe issued 12 free passes to the Tigers and Southeast issued 11 tonight. The Tribe now travels to Martin, Tennessee this weekend to take on the Skyhawks of Tennessee-Martin in a weekend series. |
