Redhawks Drop Both Games of Twinbill to Colonels
May. 1, 2005
RICHMOND, Kent. - (Sunday, May 1, 2005) The Southeast Missouri State baseball team lost both games of a rescheduled doubleheader at Turkey Hughes Field against Ohio Valley Conference opponent Eastern Kentucky Sunday afternoon. It was a tale of two different games as the Redhawks lost game one in a slugfest 12-11 then fell in a pitcher's dual 3-1 in the series finale. In Game one the Redhawks (16-26, 7-11 OVC) had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh with Eric Horstman at third and Ernie Bracamonte at second after back to back singles and a sacrifice bunt by Frank Montiel. Chris Gibson flied out in foul territory to plate Horstman to cut the lead to one 12-11. Levi Olson drew a walk but pinch hitter Keith Wollis struckout to end the game. The Colonels (19-21, 10-7 OVC) struck early and often off of Redhawks starter Derek Herbig who lasted only 1.2 innings allowing three runs in the first and two runs in the second to the potent Colonels offense. In the third the Redhawks cut the Colonels lead to one 5-4, with a four-run inning. Bo Jenkins led-off with a double down the leftfield line. Bracamonte reached on a fielders choice and Montiel walked to load the bases for Freddy Lopez. Lopez singled through the right side of the infield to plate Jenkins and Bracamonte. Hot-hitting Levi Olson then doubled to right center to drive in both Montiel and Lopez.
The Colonels added two runs in the fourth but the Redhawks matched them with two in the fifth. Montiel singled and then stole second. Olson then collected his third RBI of the game when he singled in Montiel. Back-to-back singles by James Clayton and Brent Lawson sent Olson home to make it 7-6. It quickly became 10-6 in favor of the Colonels when they scored three runs in their half of the fifth. The Redhawks responded with another four-run inning in the sixth. Jordan Payne and Horstman each singled to lead-off the inning. Bracamonte followed with a walk to load the bases with no one out. Montiel struckout for the first out of the inning. Lopez then laced a 1-2 pitch down the rightfield line for a double, plating Payne and Horstman. Wollis then singled to left to drive in Lopez. Lawson then followed with a single of his own to score Olson. Jenkins singled to load the bases but Payne grounded out to end the Redhawks threat. With the score knotted at 10 apiece the Colonels scored two in the bottom of the sixth to grab the lead for good. The Redhawks had opportunities stranding 11 runners, while the Colonels only left three runners on base. Senior Bill Clayton (0-1) was collared with the loss while Greg Harper (1-1) received the win. Lopez led the Redhawks offensively with a 2-4 performance and four RBIs. Lawson went 3-4 with two RBIs. Olson finished 2-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Horstman went 2-3 with and stole his team-high ninth stolen base. In game two the Redhawks found the offensive well dry only managing one run against Colonels starter Nick Barte (2-2) and squandered a solid pitching performance by senior Ryan Forsyth. Forsyth (2-3) went the distance for his first complete game of the season. He allowed three runs on five hits and pitched out of numerous jams. Barte however was unhittable to start the game fanning six of the first nine batters he faced. After falling behind 1-0 after the Colonels scored in the second the Redhawks tied the game in the fifth when Jenkins drove in Wollis after he drew a walk. In the sixth the Colonels scored the deciding runs to make it 3-1. In the seventh the Redhawks had a chance after Lawson led-off with a single but was stranded after Barte retired the next three batters. Lawson collected two of the Redhawks four hits going 2-3. Horstman went 1-3 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. The Redhawks return to Capaha Field on Wednesday, May 4 to face non-conference foe Evansville at 6:00 p.m. |
